Terminology
Words you will hear at a pain clinic
- Interventional pain management
- Targeted, image-guided procedures — injections, nerve blocks, ablation, implants — instead of medicines alone.
- Image-guided
- Done under live X-ray or ultrasound so the needle or device reaches exactly the right spot.
- Diagnostic block
- A test numbing injection. A few hours of relief confirms which nerve or joint is the source.
- Radiculopathy
- An irritated nerve root in the spine. Sciatica is radiculopathy in the leg.
- Neuropathic pain
- Pain from damaged or diseased nerves: burning, shooting or tingling.
- Chronic pain
- Pain lasting longer than about three months, or beyond the usual healing time.
- Stimulator trial
- A temporary test with external leads before a stimulator is implanted for good.
- Prior authorization
- Approval your insurer requires before it will cover a procedure.

Can a guide tell me which treatment I need?
No. Guides explain what treatments are and the questions worth asking. Only a clinician who has evaluated you can advise on your care.
How do I report a mistake?
